FAQ's

Date-Ability is for NDIS participants who want to:
  • Build confidence in social situations
  • Make new friends or explore dating
  • Learn about boundaries, consent, and safety
  • Better understand healthy relationships and communication
We welcome people of all genders, sexualities, and backgrounds, including LGBTQIA+ participants.
We run Date-Ability groups each term in multiple locations across Australia.  For up to date program information, look at locations in the top menu.
We also offer online groups for people who prefer to join from home or live outside these areas.

Date-Ability runs for 12 weeks. Each group session is usually around 2 hours, once a week, with a maximum of 12 participants per group.

The week before the program starts we offer a 15 min meet and greet with the facilitator or a 1 hour ‘get group ready’ appointment.  The program then runs for 11 weeks and finishes with a social event.

The program is delivered in four main modules:
  1. Foundations – self-awareness, values, confidence, and what you want from friendships and relationships
  2. Etiquette & Communication – starting conversations, online and in-person etiquette, reading social cues
  3. Safety & Boundaries – consent, boundaries, red flags, online safety, dignity of risk
  4. Sexual Health & Intimacy – healthy sexual relationships, respect, safer sex, and where to get support
We use activities, discussions, scenarios, and workbooks that are accessible and easy to understand.

Every Date-Ability session runs for 2 hours in a small group of up to 12 participants, guided by a qualified Counsellor or Sexologist. Sessions are relaxed, conversational and designed to feel safe — not like a classroom.

Before the program begins, every participant is offered either a 15-minute 1:1 meet and greet with their facilitator, or a more in-depth “Get Group Ready” session — a 1-hour appointment designed to help participants feel comfortable, ask any questions privately, and know exactly what to expect before they walk through the door. We find this makes a huge difference, especially for participants who feel nervous about joining a group for the first time.

Each weekly session follows a similar rhythm:

  • A warm-up activity to settle in and connect with the group
  • An interactive education component covering that week’s topic — using plain language, real-life scenarios and accessible workbooks
  • Group discussion and activities where participants can practise skills in a safe environment
  • A wrap-up to reflect on what was covered and what’s coming next

No two people learn the same way, so our facilitators adapt each session to the group — using visual supports, humour and practical examples that actually relate to participants’ lives. The program finishes with a signature social event where participants can put their new skills into practice and expand their social circle in a supported, fun setting.
